The picture above is of my great great grandparents, John and Mary Stacey, and probably their 4 youngest children.
Their youngest son George was born in 1882 so that would date this photograph mid to late 1880s.
I will start my thoughts with John and Mary who are the maternal branch of my family.

I wonder!

I have this photograph, which was found with my grandfather's other photographs after his death.  Nobody seems to know who the two small boys are.  They look like little urchins the way they are dressed but both have their hair neatly combed for what looks like a very casual snapshot.  Love the way they are holding hands and the puzzled look on both their faces.  I really think the darker haired one on the left looks like granddad.  What do you think?  I don't think they can be brothers as Herbert and his brothers were not that close in age.  He was born in 1894 and his younger brother in 1897.

Below is a picture of Herbert to compare it with, he is on the right in this one.

  1. For my tuppence worth, I am almost convinced that the boy on the left IS Herbert. Additionally, I don't think they look like urchins at all. Herbert's little jacket looks well made, and they both have proper shoes and socks on. I don't think the background helps. Transport the boys to a nice garden and they would look completely different.

  2. Yes Edwina agrees with you about them not looking like urchins. I suppose it is the background that gives that impression. It was the lucky children who had shoes and socks at that time. I will post more photos of Herbert later so there will be more to compare with.
